Critical Role Season Four Unveils the Soldiers Group

Ever since the premiere of the fourth campaign, recently appointed game master Brennan Lee Mulligan has maintained audience suspense with extensive world-building, a diverse cast of characters, and a exciting storyline showcasing divine entities, fiends, and sinister influences increasing in power within the urban setting.

Warning: Revealing details for Episode 3 of this adventure are included.

The Combat-Oriented Party Introduced

The third episode ended with a dramatic pause and introduced the initial group of characters who will branch out from the main group to embark on their separate journey, distinct from the additional parties.

This warrior group features Teor Pridesire (played by Travis Willingham), Thimble (the talented performer), Tyranny (Whitney Moore), Wicander Halovar (Sam), and the mysterious adventurer (Robbie).

Why Split the Party?

With an extensive roster, it was clear from the outset that having everyone at the same party would be unfeasible.

This explains, the initial installments of Campaign 4 serve as an Prelude, weaving together the characters’ stories before branching into three smaller tables: Soldiers, Planners, and Questers.

The Nature of the Combat Party

As described by the DM, the Soldiers table is for players who prefer a classically intense combat and conflict-driven story mode where non-violent answers are scarce.

Initially, figures such as the hesitant healer Wicander might seem out of place, but the events of the third episode make it clear why these specific adventurers are perfectly fit for the Soldiers table.

Motivations for Departure

To begin with, the group has a clear idea where to proceed after a brutal initial meeting with The Crow Keepers.

An old friend of the deceased character—whose passing started the campaign’s events—exploited the foes for his own means, invading the hidden lair, striking Thimble, and swiping all the powerful objects to dispose of.

Casimir then paid off his debts and fled to a fortified location in the northern region, above Dol-Makjar, with Teor’s brother hot on his heels.

Personal Motivations

Moreover, each member has a personal reason to leave the city the metropolitan area:

  • Thimble, as the companion and closest confidant, seeks retribution.
  • Kattigan is familiar with Timmony and cautions that it is a nasty place.
  • The warrior and The cleric, having disobeyed his house’s orders to eliminate the fighter and instead saved him, have no other options.
  • But, their reputation as key figures in House Halovar could assist the team reach areas they normally couldn’t.
  • Additionally, The fighter swore a eternal obligation to Wicander for his salvation and will now accompany him anywhere.

Fugitives

Finally, all of them are sought by the authorities that control Dol-Makjar for a multiple motives, making lingering locally no longer safe:

  • The rogue and Kattigan are known criminals.
  • Tyranny and The healer defied House Halovar and the army of fiends they are partnered with.
  • Teor is targeted for elimination by the family.

This results in them no alternative but to travel to the remote area in quest for the traitor.

What’s Next?

Based on the latest episode’s Cooldown, we learn that the combat party will not appear the following episode, leaving the other eight participants to round up the Seekers and Strategists groups.

Audiences can look forward to learning which adventurers will be assigned to which table in the story’s last Overture episode, streaming live on the upcoming Thursday.
